In her book 'The Common Sense Diet', celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar introduces the "Jordan Formula" as a mindful eating strategy to combat mindless consumption. This formula, exemplified by eating sabudana vadas, suggests that after consuming one portion, you should only take a second if you genuinely believe you could also eat a third; if not, you stop at one. Similarly, if you eat three, you only take a fourth if you could also eat a fifth, thus aiming to always stop at an odd number. Certified diabetes educator and dietitian Kanikka Malhotra notes that while this formula is a clever mnemonic to encourage pausing and reassessing hunger, its effectiveness hinges on whether it genuinely promotes attunement to internal hunger and satiety cues (a core principle of mindful eating) or merely encourages obedience to an external rule. Malhotra cautions that relying too much on the "odd-number ritual" might distract from true mindful eating practices, which emphasize tools like hunger/fullness scales, slow eating, and sensory engagement. Ultimately, for sustainable health, the focus should remain on individualized attention to hunger, balanced nutrition, and joyful eating free from rigid restrictions.
