Regularly engaging in varied physical activities could extend lifespan: Study

Published on: Jan. 24, 2026, 11 p.m. | Source: The Indian Express

A 30-year longitudinal study published in the British Medical Journal reveals that diversifying your exercise routine is a key factor in extending lifespan, independent of the total amount of time spent working out. By analyzing over 111,000 participants, researchers from Harvard and Chongqing Medical University found that while specific activities like walking, racquet sports, and weight training significantly lower the risk of death, engaging in the broadest variety of activities offers a superior 19% reduction in all-cause mortality. This variety also correlates with a 13-41% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, respiratory issues, and cancer. Ultimately, the findings suggest that "habitual engagement" in multiple types of movement creates a more robust defense against disease, proving that for long-term health, variety is just as vital as volume.
