says it cannot replace metformin or lifestyle treatment

Published on: May 18, 2026, 9:34 a.m. | Source: The Indian Express

Dr Pranav Ghody clarified that garlic cannot replace metformin or any prescribed treatment for pre-diabetes, stressing that while garlic may offer some general health benefits, it does not have a reliable or clinically proven effect on insulin resistance or blood sugar control. He explained that metformin works by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose production in the liver, and its use is based on strong medical evidence and supervision. Doctors emphasised that pre-diabetes management depends on sustained lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, weight control, and sleep, rather than relying on single “superfoods” like garlic. Stopping medication without medical guidance can delay proper treatment and increase the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes.
